Fysh Technical Viewfinder — Support

A precision camera companion app for large format and technical photographers. Real-time frameline overlay, Scheimpflug visualization, and exposure calculations — all running locally on your device.

What is Fysh Technical Viewfinder?

Fysh Technical Viewfinder is a mobile app designed for photographers using technical cameras like view cameras, medium format cameras with movements, and the FTC-1 Camera. It provides two main features no other app offers together:

  • Real-time frameline overlay: See exactly what your film camera will capture, with support for rise/fall and shift movements
  • Interactive Scheimpflug visualizer: Understand depth of field and the plane of focus when using tilt movements

The app also includes a bellows extension calculator and reciprocity failure calculator for common film stocks.

Key Features

Frameline Overlay

Display a real-time overlay on your phone's camera showing the exact field of view for your film camera's lens. Supports multiple focal lengths (65mm, 75mm, 90mm, 105mm, 135mm, 150mm) and aspect ratios (6×7, 6×9, 4×5, 6×17 panoramic). Adjust rise/fall and shift in real time to preview how movements affect your composition.

Scheimpflug Tilt Visualizer

See the plane of focus and depth of field when using front standard tilt. Adjust tilt angle, aperture, focus distance, and camera height to understand how Scheimpflug movements affect your image. Perfect for architectural photography and tabletop work.

Bellows Extension Calculator

Calculate exposure compensation for bellows draw when shooting close-up or macro. Enter your bellows extension and the app calculates the required f-stop adjustment.

Reciprocity Failure Calculator

Built-in reciprocity curves for popular film stocks including Ilford HP5+, FP4+, Delta 100/400, Kodak Tri-X, T-Max 100/400, Portra 160/400/800, and Ektar 100. Enter your metered shutter speed and get the corrected exposure time.

Horizon Level

Built-in horizon level indicator using your device's motion sensors. Keep your compositions straight in the field.

Supported Devices

  • iOS: iPhone running iOS 15.0 or later
  • Android: Android 8.0 (API 26) or later

The app works best on devices with accurate camera calibration. Most modern smartphones from 2018 onwards are supported.

Privacy & Offline Use

Fysh Technical Viewfinder collects no personal data. The app runs entirely offline with no analytics, no ads, and no network connections. Your camera feed is processed in real time on your device and is never recorded or transmitted. See our full Privacy Policy for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the app support my camera format?

The app currently supports 6×7, 6×9, 4×5, and 6×17 panoramic formats. If you have a specific format you'd like to see added, please contact us.

Can I add custom focal lengths?

The app includes presets for common large format lenses (65mm, 75mm, 90mm, 105mm, 135mm, 150mm). Custom focal length support is planned for a future update.

Does the frameline overlay account for lens coverage?

The frameline shows the field of view for your selected lens. The app assumes your lens has sufficient coverage for the movements you're using. Most large format lenses designed for 4×5 cameras have ample coverage for typical rise/fall and shift movements on 6×7 and 6×9 formats.

Why does the app need camera permission?

Camera permission is required to display the real-time frameline overlay. The camera feed is shown on screen only — no images or video are captured or stored. If you deny camera permission, the Scheimpflug visualizer and exposure calculators will still work.

Why does the app need motion sensor permission (iOS)?

Motion sensor permission powers the horizon level indicator. This permission is requested on iOS due to platform requirements. If you deny it, the level indicator won't work but all other features remain functional.

Does the app work offline?

Yes, completely. The app makes no network requests and works without an internet connection.

What is the FTC-1 Camera?

The FTC-1 is a 6×7 technical camera with rise/fall and shift movements, designed for architecture and landscape photography on medium format film. Fysh Technical Viewfinder was originally built as a companion app for the FTC-1, but works with any technical camera.

Can I use this app with my view camera?

Yes! The app works with any view camera (4×5, 5×7, 8×10) that uses the supported focal lengths. The frameline overlay helps you scout compositions, and the Scheimpflug visualizer is invaluable for understanding tilt movements.

How accurate is the frameline overlay?

The frameline overlay relies on your phone's camera calibration data. Most modern smartphones have accurate intrinsic calibration, making the framelines precise to within 1-2% of the actual field of view. Accuracy is best at typical working distances (1m and beyond).

Why don't my framelines match my film camera exactly?

Small discrepancies can occur due to:

  • Your phone camera's field of view not being perfectly calibrated
  • Parallax error (your phone is not in the exact position of your film camera)
  • Lens breathing on your phone camera when focusing close

For best results, position your phone's rear camera lens as close as possible to where your film camera lens will be.

Troubleshooting

The camera preview is not showing

  • Check that you've granted camera permission in your device settings
  • Close and reopen the app
  • Restart your device

The horizon level is not working (iOS)

  • Check that you've granted motion sensor permission in Settings → Privacy → Motion & Fitness
  • Close and reopen the app

The framelines seem too large/small

  • Verify you've selected the correct focal length for your lens
  • Verify you've selected the correct format (6×7, 6×9, 4×5, etc.)
  • Try moving closer or further from your subject — phone camera calibration can vary at extreme close or far distances

The app crashes on launch

  • Make sure you're running the latest version of the app
  • Restart your device
  • If the issue persists, contact support
